The Alliance of American Football readies for week four fol- lowing a third weekend of play that saw record-setting performances in the ground game by San Diego running back Ja’Quan Gardner and Birmingham running back Trent Richardson.
Week four begins on Saturday afternoon with The San Diego Fleet (2-1) visiting The Memphis Express (0-3) at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium at 4:00 PM ET on B/R Live. San Diego running back Ja’Quan Gardner set Al- liance records with 122 rush yards and a league-long 83-yard touchdown run last week while leading The Fleet to their second consecutive win.
On Saturday night at 8:00 PM ET on NFL Network, The Orlando Apollos (3-0) travel to Salt Lake to take on The Stallions (1-2) at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between Orlando head coach Steve Spurrier and Salt Lake head coach Dennis Erickson as Spurrier’s Apollos look to stay unbeaten and Erickson’s Stallions attempt to build on their home-opening victory in week three.
“Denny was at Miami a lot of the years I was at Florida. We were actually pretty good buddies, and still are good buddies,” said Spurrier about his relationship with Erickson. “Denny’s an excellent coach and does a su- per job with that team up there.”
“Well Steve and I have been close friends for many, many years,” said Erickson. “We’ve played golf together, vacationed a couple times, and came to Coeur d’Alene with his wife. So we’re very good friends. He’s proba- bly one of my closest in this business. But, I’ve never coached against him. Even when I was at Miami and he was at Florida – we didn’t play them. We played Florida State, but we didn’t play Florida. I think it was the case three of the six years I was there, I can’t remember. So, this really is the first time facing each other. Obviously, he is one of the greatest – so it will be fun to compete against him.”
Week four continues on Sunday when The San Antonio Commanders (1-2) head to Birmingham’s Legion Field Stadium to take on the Iron (3-0) at 4:00 PM ET on CBS Sports Network. The Iron continued their perfect start to the season with a 28-12 win last week behind the strength of running back Trent Richardson’s Alliance- record three touchdown runs.
The weekend concludes in primetime on Sunday night as The Arizona Hotshots (2-1) host The Atlanta Leg- ends (0-3) at Sun Devil Stadium at 8:00 PM ET on NFL Network. The Hotshots, who lead the Western Confer- ence in both scoring (24.2 points per game) and total offense (356 yards per game), won their home opener in week one and look to stay undefeated at Sun Devil Stadium.
