System will cost $79.99 and will have 42 games

When Sega announced they would be revealing the lineup in stages I chuckled. It seemed like a silly way to build hype, but it worked. Originally the announced they would list 40 games, 10 games at a time. Today, games 31-40 were announced, plus two additional never seen or extremely rare games for the Genesis/Megadrive. Those titles: Darius and Tetris. Darius is a shooter game that was originally an arcade game release in 1987 and we all know what Tetris is. Tetris is a very rare genesis game.

Here is the full lineup, sorted by genre:

  • Ecco The Dolphin
  • ToeJam & Earl

On the whole, this lineup is representative of the Genesis/Megadrive library. We’ve got one pre-ordered here at NJB and are excited to try it out. The only omissions I feel are sports games, which have been entirely neglected. Sure, getting licences for player names, but not including classics such as NHL 94 or James “Buster” Douglas Knockout Boxing is a huge let down. Sports games defined the early era of the Genesis/Megadrive. I would’ve thought Sega could’ve done something similar to what Nintendo did with Tecmo Bowl on NES online for the Switch and omit player names. Also, it seems very obvious that they will be releasing a 6 button controller since they have multiple fighting games that are certainly destined to be a lackluster experience on the bundled in 3 button configuration.
